AC Milan defender Philippe Mexes has said that the signing of Alex was like a blow to the head.

Thirty-two-year-old Mexes has been with the Rossoneri since 2011, but has been starved of playing time in the early months of this season.

“It was clear from the beginning, I said I would have less playing time because there were so many central defenders- most of which were younger than me,” the Frenchman told Corriere della Sera.

“Adil Rami had been signed the year before, and then Alex- who is the same age as me- was brought in. It was like receiving a blow to the head.”

The ex-Roma defender also spoke about the possibility of being forced out the club in the summer.

“I do not know if the club were unhappy that I refused a transfer last summer- it is true, however, that they brought players in my role to send me away.

“In football there are moments where you must know how to wait and believe in what you do, being strong with support from your family. I do not lack desire, but now I enjoy the moment with a clear conscience for having always done my duty.

Mexes finally talked about his relationship with manager Filippo Inzaghi and his performances in the season so far.

“I played against Sampdoria because Alex was injured and Daniele Bonera was suspended; I enjoyed it and hope to be considered in the near future- but I still look at moving to another club.

“Despite not playing often, the coach uses me as an example to the younger players as someone who has worked hard to earn my career.”
