AC Milan defender Philippe Mexes was bullish when asked about his lack of appearances this season, making only his second start in the 1-1 draw with Inter on Sunday.

The Rossoneri went ahead through Jeremy Menez in the first half, but Joel Obi levelled in the second to ensure a share of the points.

“There is competition,” he told Rai Sport.

“It isn’t easy to show what you can do when you don’t play, but the ball is round and I knew sooner or later I would get my chance.

“I always try to give my best. Everyone also tries to do their best and that attitude must always be there.

The 32-year-old was then asked why the quality of the derby was not of the highest standard.

“It was the time,” he continued. “Inter have a new coach and are going through a difficult period.

“We [Milan] are coming from several pro results, so there was a bit of concern. It isn’t easy but all in all we did well.

“I like all derbies, although I would have liked to win.”
