Massimo Moratti has declared that Inter had no choice but to fire Walter Mazzarri due to his overwhelming unpopularity amongst the club’s supporters .

Mazzarri was relieved of his position last Friday following a sting of poor result’s which have left the Nerazzurri in ninth place in the Serie A table. However, the former Inter president has revealed that it was the attitude of the fans towards the 53 year old, rather than results on the pitch, which ultimately made his position untenable.

“There was nothing else that could be done, he’s a good guy but too apprehensive and even sensitive,” Moratti told SportMediaset.

“He was hated by the fans. I’ve never seen such a thing. At this point there was really no other option.”

Moratti then turned his attention to Roberto Mancini who returns for his second spell as Inter coach ahead of Sunday’s Milan Derby.

“Mancini was always my preference for the position. For me, only Mancini or Leonardo could be considered candidates and I told this to [Erick] Thohir. Bravo to Thohir for the appointment.

“Now I can breathe a bit more easily.”

Mancini had previously coached Inter between 2004 and 2008, winning three Scudetti.
