Chievo

Albano Bizzarri – 7.5 – Wall

Looked a bit flappy to start with but made some good saves from long shots and grew into the game very well. Made a crucial save at the death to prevent Stefan De Vrij from getting a dramatic winner.

Alessandro Gamberini – 7.5 – Rock

Capable at the back and looked dangerous when sent forward for set pieces. Got back at the last moment a few times to make vital interceptions after his fellow defenders lost their men.

Ivan Radovanovic – 6 – Solid

Didn’t catch the eye but that’s not a bad thing for a defender and did his job when called upon.

Bostjan Cesar – 5.5 – Firm

Did a solid job at the back and won the challenges he needed to win if a bit untidy at times

Mariano Izco – 6.5 – Fleeting

Not especially influential in controlling the play but popped up at times with eye-catching pieces of play. Played in a nice cross from deep that just evaded Riccardo Meggiorini in the 28th minute and shook the side-netting with an effort of his own just after the hour.

Nicolas Frey – 5.5 – Weak link

Looked uncomfortable in possession and seemed to be operating on a different wavelength from his teammates at times. Not especially impressive defensively and the visitors seemed to target the right-back.

Valter Birsa – 5.5 – Frustrating

Looked good in bursts when running at defenders on the counterattack. Played a few intelligent and subtle passes but struggled to really assert himself on the game and his decision making let him down at times and he looked a spent force when replaced by Nicola Bellomo.

Alberto Paloschi – 5 – Isolated

Tried to make things happen but sometimes too ambitious for his own good and the striker ran into a few too many crowds of Lazio shirts when he could have picked the simpler option and drifted out of the game as time went on before being taken off for Maxi Lopez.

Perparim Hetemaj – 6.5 – Bustling

Energetic in the Chievo midfield and put a foot in when necessary. Good level of fight that pushed the Lazio defence back but not quite enough creativity to open them up.

Riccardo Meggiorini – 6 – Agitator

Used his physique to harass the Lazio defence and made a nuisance of himself. Not the most beautiful type of football to watch but effective at times even if he looked clumsy on the ball. Taken off with just over 20 minutes left after doing a job for the side.

Ervin Zukanovic – 5.5 – Under Siege

Missed a good chance from a free-kick in the 19th minute. Offered little on the left-flank and struggled to keep Candreva under control.

Substitutes

Sergio Pellissier – 5 – Remote

Came on to a hero’s welcome but struggled to get onto the end of things

Nicola Bellomo – 5 – Off

Did little after coming on and gifted possession to Lazio with a weak challenge at the death that could have been costly.

Maxi Lopez – N/A

Lazio

Federico Marchetti – 6 – Present

Did everything he had to do capably. Very vocal in orchestrating the players in front of him.

Stefan De Vrij – 6.5 – Encouraging

Tidy on the ball and displayed an admirable sense of ambition from the heart of defence by trying to play attractive football and launch attacks from the back.

Edson Braafheid – 4.5 – Down

Got forwards throughout the game but did little once high up the pitch. His Crossing let Lazio down after they found some joy in exploiting the left side of the pitch.

Stefano Mauri – 6 – Nice and simple

Impressive at hitting simple first-time passes that kept the ball moving and brought his teammates into the play.

Dusan Basta – 5.5 – Unconvicning

Did little going forwards from right-back when it seemed as the overlap was on. Struggled at times in defence when up against physical Chievo attacking play.

Filip Djordjevic – 5 – Isolated

Nice movement and made some space for himself with intelligent runs into channels but struggled to do much when on the ball and then struggled to hit the target when left with enough space to fire at goal.

Alvaro Gonzalez – 6 – Neat

Tidy in keeping things ticking over in midfield and the Uruguayan displayed some good vision to pick out his teammates but ultimately he didn’t quite have enough to open Chievo up.

Marco Parolo – 5.5 – Nearly

Wasted a good chance after being set up by Mauri.  Didn’t always look comfortable when pressed by Ceo’s midfield but otherwise capable.

Lucas Biglia – 5.5 – Uninspiring

Did his job in shielding the defence but could have contributed more in terms of distribution and the Argentine’s shooting was disappointing.

Stefan Radu – 6 – Rugged

Performed well in a more central defensive position. Rugged and at times aggressive in a manner that irritated the Chievo attackers and was successful in keeping them from scoring.

Antonio Candreva – 6 – Promising

Capable in driving the ball forward on the counterattack and switched the ball from flank to flank with some sublime long-balls and Lazio lost some creativity after he went off on the hour mark.

Substitutes

Felipe Anderson – 5 – Deceptive

Flattered to deceive and looked impressive when taking on the home defenders but ultimately his skill led created little in terms of chances.

Keita Balde – 5 – Superfluous

Worried the Gialloblu defenders with his dribbling skills but it led to little as impressive as it was.

Miroslav Klose – N/A
