Miroslav Klose’s double was enough to see Lazio hang on against Cagliari at the Stadio Olimpico on Monday night in Serie A as they moved up to third spot.

The 36-year-old German was in fine form to to score the decisive goals after veteran captain Stefano Mauri put the home side ahead, while Edson Braafheid put into his own net and Joao Pedro scored late on for the visitors, before Ederson finished the game off in injury time.

Lazio

Federico Marchetti – 6 – Athletic
Spent much of the game as a spectator but did have to come off his line quickly on a couple of occasions and saved a one-on-one with Ibarbo which proved to be important.

Michael Ciani – 5 – Anarchic
Looked uneasy when put under any sort of pressure and lost out to Benedetti priro to Joao Pedro’s goal.

Stefan de Vrij – 5 – Basic
Like his defensive partner he didn’t look comfortable with balls played into the Lazio penalty area and didn’t take charge before Cagliari’s first goal.

Edson Braafheid – 6.5 – Mechanic
Put a spanner in the Casteddu works by nullifying the threat of Ibarbo for long periods of the game and was slightly unlucky to score an own goal.

Pereirinha – 5.5 – Harmonic
Fitted well into the Biancocelesti back four and showed robust defending at times despite never really being involved in the game in a meaningful way.

Stefano Mauri – 6 – Talismanic
Guided his team with an effective captain’s performance which was capped with a goal.

Marco Parolo – 5.5 – Energetic
Kept himself busy in midfield as usual and didn’t allow the opposition to settle.

Lucas Biglia – 6 – Metronomic
Was quietly effective with simple passing and sensible play to keep things ticking over.

Miroslav Klose – 7.5 – Titanic
Sunk the Sardinians ship with two differing finishes that outlined his undoubted scoring ability and provided the assist for Mauri’s goal.

Senad Lulic – 7 – Volcanic
Was bubbling along well after assisting both Klose goals and then exploded in a second half incident which saw Cagliari’s Ibarbo sent off.

Antonio Candreva – 6.5 – Dynamic
As ever, a willing runner on the right side but despite setting up Ederson’s late goal a lot of the Italian international’s deliveries were poor.

Substitutes

Filip Djordjevic – N/A
62nd minute substitution.

Ogenyi Onazi- N/A
79th minute substitution.

Ederson – N/A
88th minute substitution. Scored a late goal from Candreva’s cut-back to put the game beyond doubt.

Cagliari

Alessio Cragno – 5 – Able
Four goals conceded for the Rossoblu keeper however the youngster looked assured and commanding at times and could be one for the future.

Nicola Murru – 5.5 – Available
A tough night for the Italy Under-21 man but was always willing to receive the ball from Cragno and look for a pass.

Francesco Pisano – 6.5 – Durable
Defensively sharp at times and made several lung-busting runs up the right channel, one of which led to his side’s opening goal.

Luca Rossettini – 4.5 – Accessible
Freely attacked by the Lazio frontline and received little protection from the midfielders in front of him.

Luca Ceppitelli – 4 – Terrible
Lost Klose for the German’s first goal, was booked for a bad foul and replaced by Benedetti after 58 minutes.

Lorenzo Crisetig – 4.5 – Negligible
A night to forget for the young midfielder on loan from Inter, made several fouls and wasted possession too many times.

Daniele Conti – 4.5 – Invisible
Struggled from the early stages of the game and gave the ball away badly before Klose’s second goal.

Albin Ekdal – 6.5 – Dependable
One of the few Cagliari players to come out of the game with any credit, the Swede was considered in possession and positive going forward.

Andrea Cossu – 6 – Capable
The veteran showed plenty of movement and willingness to attack however his final product was lacking for much of the game.

Victor Ibarbo – 5 – Irritable
Was well marshalled by Braafheid for long periods but came to life in the second half with some strong runs. Unfortunately for his side he got himself sent off just as they looked to be mounting a comeback.

Marco Sau – 5 – Interchangeable
Like Cossu the forward found himself roaming into different positions to find the ball but struggled to make an impact against the more physically imposing Lazio defenders.

Substitutes

Antonio Balzano – N/A
58th minute substitution.

Simone Benedetti – 6 – Sensible
58th minute substitution. Immediately looked more assured than Ceppitelli and beat Ciani in air to assist Joao Pedro’s goal.

Joao Pedro – 6 – Gamble
79th minute substitution. Bagged his first goal for the club but it ultimately arrived too late to prompt a comeback.
