Castan – Roma

Roma have confirmed defender Leandro Castan will undergo neurosurgery at the beginning of December to correct the issue.

The Brazil international suffered a bout of acute dizziness following Roma’s 1-0 victory over Empoli in September, Castan was substituted during the interval at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.

Roma released a statement on their official website explaining the 28-year-old’s absence and the course of action to return the player safely to playing football.

“Medical tests have revealed a congenital vascular alteration in his brain, a condition more commonly known as a cavernoma,” the statement read.

“Although the cavernoma does not represent a threat to the player’s life – indeed, he is currently in peak physical condition – he is at risk of reoccurrences.

“Therefore, the medical staff, club and player have agreed that he will undergo neurosurgery at the beginning of December in order to definitively cure the problem. This will allow him to resume regular competitive sporting activity.”
