Legendary calcio coach Arrigo Sacchi has hit out at the state of the Italian game – saying it is being left behind the rest of Europe.

The former AC Milan boss was speaking after a lacklustre week of Champions League action that saw Juventus squeeze past Olympiacos and Roma being soundly beaten by Bayern Munich in Germany.

Speaking after the Giallorossi’s loss, the Canale 5 pundit said: “Let us not speak of Roma, as they are the brightest team in our league at the moment.

“But when we compare [our sides to the rest], we see that there is a huge difference. We think that the way to get a result is through strength and the technical skill of an individual.

“I do not think that there is any difference from the point of view of the individual but rather when it comes to the team. Bayern force you to play at a very fast pace but Italian football is old fashioned, and tonight we saw a huge difference.”

He concluded: “You play in a much different way that you normally do and in this aspect, Italian football is behind.”
