Inter president Erick Thohir feels the sacking of Walter Mazzarri was necessary and has called for time from the fans for new coach Roberto Mancini to get his ideas across.

Mazzarri was relieved of his duties with the Nerazzurri after a string of poor results left them languishing in ninth place in the Serie A table.

“The last few days have been eventful,” Thohir told shareholders.

“When making decisions, they can be positive or negative, but the important thing is that everyone understands that the leadership is strong, prepared and has a goal: to do the right thing and bring Inter into the top 10 companies in the world.

“The decisions will always be collective, as was the change of coach. Our goal is to win the qualification to a European Cup next season, though it would be best to get in the Champions League.

“Now we are preparing for three big games, against AC Milan, Roma and Udinese, and we have to get as many points as possible.

“I would like three wins, but I know it is not easy. We have to get into the top 4-5 in the standings. We have played only 11 matches and 17 points have been dropped, but gap to third place is small and we can recover. We are looking to do better, but know it won’t be easy.”

The Indonesian tycoon then went on to address the appointment of Mancini directly, as well as former coach Mazzarri.

“It’s important to give Mancini time so the team understands his methods,” Thohir continued.

“We have a good squad and also Mancini is convinced of its quality. Our coach knows there is financial fair play, knows our strategy and the desire to get back in the top 10 clubs in the world.

“At the same time he has experience, charisma and can help reach our goal of Champions League football. He had the courage to say ‘yes’ to Inter, which is in a difficult situation and needs maximum support.

“This past year Mazzarri took us into Europe and we extended his contract, but I immediately told everyone that we need to get the results if we are to play in European cups.

“He remains one of the best Italian coaches, but sometimes if the results are not good, we must intervene. It was not a lack of respect for him, but a necessary act for the good of Inter. Now there is a three-year contract with Mancini and a important project.”
