Torino coach Giampiero Ventura confessed that Fabio Quagliarella should have taken his side’s missed penalty against Sassuolo that went on to cost them dearly.

Juan Sanchez Mino missed a first half spot kick that was easily saved by Andrea Consigli before his side succumbed to Antonio Floro Flores’ late winner and he offered little sympathy or encouragement to the Argentine when speaking about him, having also substituted him at half time.

He spoke to Sky Sport Italia after the game and a clearly frustrated Torino boss began: “The penalty kick was designated to Quagliarella who should have taken it but he decided to give it to Sanchez Mino who is going through a difficult time.

“It was a nice gesture but unfortunately it has not paid off for us. Sanchez Mino had a poor game, not just for the missed penalty but because he lost some balls too. Italian football is tough and like that, nobody will give you anything but I do not want to blame anyone. As I said, it was a nice gesture from Fabio.”

The Granata boss then rounded surprisingly on his own supporters who were considerably unhappy and frustrated throughout the match and who booed his side off the field at the end of the match.

“We try not to think about things like whistles within the dressing room,” Ventura continued. “We do not make mistakes by accident but from the beginning, the fans seemed to be against us.

“After two minutes, I heard chants like ‘shame!’ and ‘show us your balls’ and ‘be brave’ but we are talking about a team that has more points than [the same time] last year, which is playing in the Europa League and which, in this game, created numerous scoring chances and conceded in the final minutes.

“If we had won ourselves by a couple of goals then it would not have been an unfair result but the environment, of course, was not very favourable for us.”

He continued: “I think we played one of our best games of the season today but football is really bizarre, without taking anything away from Sassuolo.”
