Former Italy coach Marcello Lippi believes Roma captain Francesco Totti is one of the greatest players in the history of Italian football.

The Giallorossi legend was awarded the Facchetti Award in recognition of his contribution to the game at Gazzetta dello Sport’s ‘Bello del Calcio’ ceremony on Monday and joined the likes of Paolo Maldini, Eric Abidal and Michel Platini as winners of the award.

“He is one of the greatest players in the history of Italian football,” Lippi stated as reported by Tuttomercatoweb.

The recently retired coach was also asked about the hooliganism surrounding the Italy and Croatia match where flares thrown on the pitch resulted in a 10 minute suspension.

“You can not help but be disappointed when a few foreigners ruin a great game of football in one of the most beautiful stadiums [San Siro] in the world.”

“I do not know what can be done to put an end to this, you need to ask the proper authorities.”
