Giovanni Trapattoni, the Republic of Ireland head coachLegendary Italian tactician Giovanni Trapattoni believes that teams likes Roma and Napoli can still challenge reigning Serie A champions Juventus for the Scudetto this season despite the Old Lady’s position in the standings.

The Bianconeri currently sit in first place on the league table with 31 points, which puts them three points ahead of the second place Giallorossi and nine points in front of the third place Partenopei, but the former Juve boss admits that the trailing clubs may have a chance at overcoming the Turin giants before the campaign comes to an end.

Trapattoni spoke to Tele Radio Stereo about the race for the Scudetto this term and why he feels several teams still have a shot at knocking Juventus off of the top spot, while also commenting on Roberto Mancini’s return to the helm of Inter.

“Juventus are not unreachable in the standings,” said the 75-year-old, who had very successful stints as coach of both Juventus and Inter from 1976-94.

“Roma, as well as Napoli, must understand that Massimiliano Allegri’s team have many commitments. They are very strong as a team, but despite an almost unstoppable style of play, they can still be harassed.

“The race for the Scudetto remains open.

“Mancini at Inter? He picked up a big cat that is not easy to tame, even in the matters regarding the current period of change the club is going through at this time.

“[Inter president Erick] Thohir cannot spend the money that some other teams spend abroad, but it seems that he is planning for the future with the new coach.”
