Inter legend Javier Zanetti has spoken about how his role as the Nerazzurri’s vice-president fills him with pride.

The Argentine finished his playing career in May 2014, moving into the boardroom to assist president Erick Thohir.

“Being vice-president of Inter fills me with pride,” Zanetti told the press at an event for Fondazione Milan Onlus – with fellow speaker Paolo Maldini.

The former Inter captain, known for his versatility and commitment, spoke about the state of the current Inter squad.

“The current squad is very young, and I hope those kids will go on to have a very good career like mine,” he enthused.

“We are starting to see young players in the first-team, the youth squad currently has six or seven training with the senior side. This can only get better in the future.

Forty-one-year-old Zanetti, who moved to Inter from Banfield in 1995, also talked about his upbringing and his final Derby della Madonnina.

“The sacrifices of my mother and father showed me how to chase a dream,” he continued. “They taught me respect, which is critical.

“In my last derby, Mazzarri left me on the bench. I knew there were other games, but I wanted to play. I respected his decision.”
