AC Milan defender Ignazio Abate has thanked former Diavolo coaches Massimiliano Allegri and Leonardo for helping him make a name for himself at the club.

The 28-year-old came up through the Rossoneri youth system and began his professional career at the San Siro outfit in 2003, but had been passed around on loan up until Leonardo’s arrival at the Italian side in 2009 and was given even more of an opportunity to prove himself under Allegri from 2010-14.

Abate spoke to the press during AC Milan’s annual Youth Sector Christmas party about his relationships with his coaches over the years and revealed that Leonardo and Allegri have helped him the most.

“I’ve had a good relationship with all of my coaches throughout my career,” said the Italian international, who has provided six assists in his 10 Serie A appearances this season thus far.

“However, I’d have to say thank you to Leonardo for giving me a chance to show my quality and also to Allegri for giving me continuity.”
