AC Milan have confirmed the details of their planned new 42,000 seat stadium with construction work scheduled to begin in 2016.

The innovative nature of Barbara Berlusconi’s project has convinced the Rossoneri’s sponsor Emirates to give their backing to the project and invest considerably.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the new stadium will be located in the Portello area of the city, in an area of 60,000 square metres opposite the club’s headquarters at Casa Milan.

The Casa Milan architect Fabio Novembre has designed a stadium that contains 42,000 seats and will be built 15 metres underground in order to comply with planning regulations so that it will not exceed existing local buildings in terms of height.

The underground nature of the construction will also have a soundproofing effect and prevent noise from disturbing the local area while also increasing the acoustics inside the stadium in an attempt to improve the atmosphere.

The ambition shown by the plans has persuaded Emirates to continue with their sponsorship of AC Milan and it is expected the airline will purchase the stadium’s naming rights.

AC Milan now have to arrange a financing plan for the new stadium but they aim to start construction by 2016 and open their new home between 2019 or 2020.
