Italy boss Antonio Conte has urged domestic clubs to be more cooperative with the national team and insisted that the success of the Italian squad should be viewed as the top priority.

The Azzurri are currently undefeated in their six matches under the 45-year-old tactician, who took up the position as head coach from Cesare Prandelli in August, but he admits that certain things must change if Italians want their national team to return to its former glory, including more collaboration from the players’ clubs.

Conte spoke to Rai Sport about the current state of the Italian national team and commented on what has to be done in order for Italy to continue improving.

“The balance is positive,” said the former Juventus boss. “We have won five out of our six games and drew with Croatia, who are currently ahead of us in progress at the moment.

“Training the national team is a huge responsibility, but it’s beautiful. We want to make the fans proud. We Italians have always been able to pull out our claws in difficult times.

“There must be more cooperation between clubs and the national team, there is the desire to build something more collaborative.

“Clubs are important, but the national team is everything. You have to think about the good of Italy, this is a very critical moment.”
