Dear Santa: A Christmas wishlist from Genoa

Dear Santa,

Enrico Preziosi here. Let me start by saying I have been a good boy this season. Not only have I kept Gian Piero Gasperini as coach for over one year, but I even gave Fabio Liverani a glowing endorsement as a coach. I guess it wasn’t too honest an endorsement, but in my defence, I didn’t expect Leyton Orient to actually hire him.

I suppose the thing I want the most, is for Mattia Perin to never ever leave the club. As you know, he has rescued us numerous times this season and without him we’d be in a lot of trouble.

His 50 saves in 15 games have been invaluable. I guess, however, that I could part with him for a suitcase full of money.

I don’t want to be too greedy as I know this has hurt Genoa in the past, but I would like my strikers to be more consistent in the second half of the season. Genoa have long been a club in which strikers get re-born (Diego Milito, Marco Borriello, Alberto Gilardino) and this season has been no different as Alessandro Matri has resurrected his career. Matri’s six goals and five assists have been more than anyone expected. But Santa, he hasn’t scored one of those goals at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pinilla has cooled down since his hot start. His four goals in all competitions has been appreciated, but it has now been two whole months since he last scored. Also, he could use some new boots as he is having increasing trouble staying on his feet.

If you could sort them out then I’d be a much happier president, which Genoa tifosi know that means I’ll keep my hands out of the coach’s business.

To be honest Santa, I am extremely happy with my team at the moment. Of course, if AC Milan and Adriano Galliani have any more castoffs, I am sure we can get them to be an important part of our team (Luca Antonelli, Luca Antonini, Matri). Perhaps they want to loan us Stephan El Sharaawy? He did come through our primavera team and of course you know we are quite good at developing young players.

Finally Santa, remember when I said I didn’t want to be greedy? Well, I’m sorry, but is there any way you can deliver us Champions League football? Again, I’ve been really good. So, if we can start playing the teams at the lower end of la classifica as well as we play the top teams, then I’m sure we can achieve it.

Remember Santa, we are on the north side of the Marassi, don’t go to the south side, that’s Sampdoria’s end. There you will find an envelope with some cash, a plate of pasta al pesto Genovese and a bottle of red wine.

Buon Natale,

Enrico Preziosi

PS. Remember to get all the toys you will deliver for Christmas from my toy company Fingiochi. We need the money!
