Dear Santa: A Christmas wishlist from Sampdoria

Dear Santa,

My name is Sinisa Mihajlovic, and I am currently the coach of Sampdoria, who are currently in the battle for a Champions League spot.

My first wish for Christmas is for a wall to be built around Genoa. We need to stop our city and home ground from being flooded and we also need to stop as many clubs as possible from luring my players away from Il Doria.

Manolo Gabbiadini looks set to depart for Napoli, as well as other key players such as Pedro Obiang, Roberto Soriano and Stefano Okaka who have attracted interest from clubs in Italy and the rest of Europe.

Obiang has been targeted by Inter and Napoli, and English Premier League club West Ham United have a man-crush on him. Soriano has been linked with Serie A’s “Big Three” as well as Spanish club Valencia; Okaka has also attracted interest from both Milanese clubs.

These rivals of ours want to destroy our unity and I do not want them to treat us like one of your stockings. Despite this, I am happy to accommodate either Udinese or Roma to take former Catania striker Gonzalo Bergessio from us.

Secondly, I would like you to remind Sergio Romero about the spirit of Christmas. English giants Liverpool want him but we love Sergio dearly and he is a great part of our team. We want him to stay with us.

I would like to bolster my stocks in attack. My team has been rewarded with an early Christmas present from Argentina by the name of Joaquin Correa. If Gabbiadini sadly departs from the Luigi Ferraris, Correa might be his worthy heir up front.

An attacking midfielder with more Serie A experience would help too and Fiorentina’s Josip Ilicic would fit the bill. If not, perhaps Juventus could send Sebastian Giovinco down to us.

There are also strikers like AC Milan’s Giampaolo Pazzini, Udinese’s Luis Muriel, Galatasaray’s Goran Pandev and Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli who are struggling to make an impact at their current clubs. Perhaps one of them can see the light and play for Sampdoria. We are a club known for getting careers back on track.

One option I am not considering up front is Antonio Cassano. The Parma striker wants to return to Sampdoria but he is not a Messiah. He is a naughty boy and you would not want to give a bad boy a Christmas present.

Last but not least, I want you to give my players the gift of courage because I always want them to be men first and players second.

Under the Christmas tree at our training facility in Bogliasco, you will find a piece of Pandolce Genovese and a bottle of rakija from my native Serbia. There will also be a scarf signed by our beloved president Massimo Ferrero that you can wear on your future sleigh rides.

Yours sincerely,
Sinisa
