Lorenzo Tonelli scored the equalizer to secure a 1–1 draw against Fiorentina on Sunday Serie A action, a goal he dedicated to Empoli, the city which adopted him and gave him everything.
Tonelli rose highest on the corner-kick to head in the all-important equalizer as Empoli went on to salvage a draw in their local derby clash against Fiorentina.
“It is very emotional [for me to score], because I was born here [in Florence] and this is my city,” Tonelli said to Sky Sport Italia.
“But I am happy I scored. I am Florentine but my team is Empoli.
“I grew up here in terms of football and I owe Empoli everything.”
Tonelli’s goal stunned Fiorentina who had been dominating much of the match, and raised Empoli up to 13th in Serie A
