Former Rangers midfielder Gennaro Gattuso could be set to become the new manager of the club following the resignation of Ally McCoist.

McCoist will serve a 12 month notice period after quitting the Glasgow club and may be removed as first-team coach while being placed on gardening leave.

As a result, a new boss would need to be appointed and, according to TuttoMercatoWeb, the former AC Milan midfielder is in pole position to take over the Scottish Championship club.

Gattuso is currently in charge of OFI Crete but also tendered his resignation in October this year, before changing his mind the next day.

The Glasgow side are in financial dire straights and need to come up with around €11 million by the end of January in order to keep the club afloat.

Rangers are currently nine points behind Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish second tier.
