Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini was buoyant ahead of his side’s Coppa Italia clash against Empoli at the Stadio Carlo Castellani on Wednesday.

The Grifoni head man has reason to be optimistic given Genoa’s form has landed the Rossoblu level on points with Napoli and in fourth place in the Serie A standings.

Genoa’s official website quoted the 56-year old tactician: “Empoli is a well organised squad which presents difficulties for us to face, but the Coppa Italia is a test and we aim to go through.”

At stake is an unenviable match up at the Stadio Olimpico in a Round of 16 tie against a Roma side looking for the silver star, an unofficial award granted to clubs upon their 10th Coppa Italia trophy. Roma and Juventus currently share the record for most triumphs with nine.

“We have a great atmosphere and this keeps me calm. We’ve come back eight times from losing positions in Serie A this season and that’s a testament to our team spirit.”

Gasperini is enjoying his second spell at the Ligurian club, returning to the Grifoni after unsuccessful spells at Inter and Palermo.

“The Serie A season is a difficult one but we haven’t lost our focus as we remain centered on our initial objectives.

“It’s difficult to imagine keeping up this pace but all the players are making important contributions and I’m proud of how everyone has responded.”
