Chievo beat Hellas Verona 1-0 in the Derby della Scala on Sunday afternoon at the Stadio Bentegodi in Serie A.

Alberto Paloschi got the winner 10 minutes from the end, after a game in which both sides displayed lots of passion as expected in a derby, but with little in the way of quality.

Chievo started on the front foot in the opening 10 minutes but failed to forge clearcut chances, as Hellas largely resorted to hitting long balls to Luca Toni.

Toni almost set up Nene in the 16th minute after creating some space for himself in the area, but the Italian’s dangerous ball across the face of goal was well cleared at the last moment.

Nene almost opened the scoring in spectacular fashion in the 19th minute after meeting an Ivan Martic cross from the right with a bicycle kick but his effort was bravely blocked, and the Flying Donkeys defended well at the subsequent corner.

Radovanovic asked a question of the Hellas defence moments later with a free kick from deep which was scrambled away for a corner at the last moment.

Tensions rose in the following minutes with a few tough tackles coming in from both sides that angered both sets of supporters.

The Mastini broke down the left flank with some nice interplay but Nene’s low drive arose goal was well held by Albano Bizzarri before it could find the feet of Toni.

Verona’s tidy built-up play led to a cross aimed at Toni just after the half hour, but the ball was at an awkward angle behind the striker and he couldn’t generate enough power to test Bizzarri in Chievo’s goal.

Hellas had shout for a penalty not long before the break when the ball hit a Chievo arm in the area, but the referee deemed it to be unintentional and the sides went in goalless after a first half that saw lots of passion and commitment but less technical ability.

After a slightly sloppy start to the second half, the home side won a corner but it was nodded away before Rafael Marquez could get his head to hit and Davide Brivio sliced wide from the rebound.

Chievo had a good chance minutes later when Riccardo Meggiorini was slipped in but his shot from a narrow angle was too close to Francesco Benussi. The away side pushed forward but Meggiorini, again, wasn’t able to direct a cross from the left at the Hellas goal.

Chievo tested Benussi with an Radovanovic shot from a ridiculous distance after an hour that forced the goalkeeper to tip over at the expense of a corner, which Hellas dealt with easily.

Hellas started to push forwards after 65 minutes and Nene headed over from an Emil Hallfredsson corner when he should have done better.

Chievo took the lead in the 80th minute after a wonderful Ervin Zukanovic cross from the left-flank was met by the head of Paloschi at close range.

Verona had to bounce back immediately and they did get the ball up the pitch but were unable to find a way through the mass of bodies in the Chievo box.
