Chievo coach Rolando Maran said a combination of playing with their hearts and their heads was crucial in helping them to victory over Hellas Verona in the derby.

The former Catania boss had a distinguished playing career with the Flying Donkeys but never managed to turn out for them in a Derby della Scala match but an Alberto Paloschi goal helped them to maximum points in his first derby as a coach.

“The team worked very hard and in the right way to help us win a very important match, both given the fact that it helps our league position and because it was a derby,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“I knew it would be a physical game with not a lot of good play on show but the guys were great. We have won this derby with our hearts and our heads and by having to suffer too.”

He also praised the impact of super sub Paloschi and played down talk that goalkeeper Francesco Bardi could leave the club in January.

“In the second half I wanted to change something because I know that I have some remarkable strikers at the club. I saw that Meggiorini was a little and gave Alberto an opportunity,” beamed Maran.

“Could Bardi leave next month? This is not the time to talk about these things. I am convinced that he, like Bizzarri, is a good goalkeeper.”
