Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli says there need to be in-roads made regarding the public knowledge and understanding of the work done by referees worldwide.

The 43-year-old agreed referees are scapegoats in the world of football yet hoped supporters and teams alike would take the pressure off them and talk of other related topics.

At the Globe Soccer Gala he spoke of increasing understanding of the difficult role assumed by referees.

“They need to know a bit more about the effort and work that goes into our business, which is very difficult and obviously objectionable as far as civil,” he said.

“We know the Italian culture and it is easy to talk about a mistake first.

“But it would be nice to take a step forward and talk about other things,” he said.

Rizzoli believes a post-match explanation of decisions could aide their cause.

“It would be nice to be able to explain decisions, but we would like someone to listen,” he continued.

“We are making some progress and if we were to find fertile ground we could make more improvements.”
