Sampdoria defeated Brescia 2-0 on Thursday night to progress through to the round of 16 of the Coppa Italia

The Blucerchiati had an aggressive first half with several attempts on Brescia’s goal, most notably an acrobatic attempt from Gonzalo Bergessio at the 20th minute.

Sampdoria’s Manolo Gabbiadini capitalized on a penalty awarded after a hard foul from Brescia goalkeeper Michele Arcari at the 31st minute. Gabbiadini punished Brescia’s mistake with a decisive strike into the low left corner.

Brescia arrived with some force after the beginning of the first half and had a couple of attempts on goal. Their efforts unfortunately proved to be in vain after Sampdoria struck again.

Bergessio exploited a serious error from Brescia defender Antonio Caracciolo and put his side up 2-0 in the 58th minute. Arcari found himself grossly out of position and was unable to stop Bergessio’s strike.

Brescia continued their efforts for the remainder of the game but were unable to close the goal gap. Marco Valotti and Ruben Olivera both had dangerous chances to close the gap but were unable to put the ball past Emiliano Viviano.

Sampdoria clung to their advantage and prevented Brescia from scoring for the remainder of the match, though Sinisa Mihajlovic was sent off for protesting.

Sampdoria will now square off against Inter in the round of 16 of the Coppa Italia.
