Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has reacted publicly to a three-month ban laid down for racist comments aimed at Inter counterpart Erick Thohir.

Ferrero was banned and fined €10,000, along with a further €35,000 by his own club, for a racist ‘joke’ demeaning Thohir.

“Good evening my friends,” said Ferrero via the club’s official website after hearing of the punishment.

“Today something happened that is incredible… Yet true, and unfortunately we’re not on Candid Camera.

“I thank all of the fans of all the Italian clubs that my Samp and Doria has met and will meet, for the fondness and respect shown towards me.

“I’d also like to thank Italian referees who every Sunday, even under crazy pressure and at times even intimidation and violence, enforce the rules of football on every pitch.

“Without those rules which were laid down over a century ago, this would not be the most beautiful, beloved and watched sport in the world.

“Thank you to everyone! Your president, Massimo Ferrero.”
