Frosinone and Livorno were both unable to reduce the gap at the Serie B summit and capitalize on Carpi’s Friday night draw.

Cellar dwellers Cittadella walked into the Stadio Matusa in wretched form, playing against a motivated Frosinone side who were aware a victory would close the gap at the top to a manageable four points, but only succeeded in a disappointing a 1-1 finish. Serie-B-300x181

Citta did not play like a club seeking their first home victory of the season as the match’s initial chances all fell to the Granata.

Veteran Claudio Coralli should have made more from a pair of shots which flew wide of Massimo Zappino’s net, denying Cittadella a reward for controlling much of the early action.

Order was restored after the break when Frosinone’s Daniele Ciofani managed to loop a header over the outstretched hands of Alex Valentini for the striker’s eighth tally of the campaign.

Citta never appeared overwhelmed and kept pushing for the deserved equalizer. Their determination paid off in stoppage time on a seemingly innocuous throw-in deep into Frosinone territory when Filippo Scaglia somehow managed to direct his header comically over Zappino who was left stumbling after the ball as Roberto Stellone’s men couldn’t answer the welcome knock of opportunity.

Livorno drew Virtus Entella 1-1 in a lively match which kicked off with a bang and was only marred by some wayward finishing.

The Amaranto were dynamic and aggressive in the early going but were beat back by a resolute Entella defense and the hosts were rewarded inside the quarter hour mark when Andrea Mazzarani collected his own rebound to net his second goal of the campaign.

Livorno nearly equalized minutes later when Enej Jelenic found himself one-on-one with Entella keeper Andrea Paroni but the long-time Biancocelesti managed a last gasp kick save to deny the Slovenian.

Minutes after Aniello Cutolo entered the match in the second half, his cross was met by a stunning redirected header from Andrey Galabinov whose fourth tally of the season secured a draw extending Livorno’s unbeaten streak to four matches but nonetheless leaving the Labronici wondering what might have been.

Fan protests marked Catania’s 2-2 draw with Brescia. Both sides have hit the skids this season and the Elefanti faithful at Stadio Massimino vented their anger as fans unfurled a large “Respect the shirt” banner and the normally raucous curva Nord was vacant as a paltry crowd of under 6,000 witnessed a pair of sides languishing near the play-out positions.

Modena secured a 2-1 home victory against Trapani thanks to Nicola Ferrari’s first goal of the season in the 88th minute.

Perugia let a valuable two points slip away at home as Pescara found the equalizer deep into stoppage time in a 2-2 final at the Stadio Curi.

Meanwhile a pair of 1-0 home victories for Varese and Vicenza over Crotone and Spezia and a 2-1 home victory from Pro Vercelli over Ternana rounded out week 19 in Serie B action.
