Udinese overcame a difficult Cesena side 4-2 at the Stadio Friuli on Wednesday evening in the Coppa Italia.

Lucas Evangelista and Cyril Thereau claimed the victory for Udinese after Cesena kept coming back at them with Davide Succi making the game go to extra time, where Udinese won over 10-men Cesena after Massimo Volta was sent off.

Udinese were the clear favourites after having won four out of their last five meetings with Cesena, despite them starting a weakened side for this fourth round clash.

In the fourth minute, though, Cesena were ahead, thanks to a Milan Djuric header after a low cross allowed the Bosnian to nod past goalkeeper Simone Scuffet.

Udinese equalized just five minutes later, when Allan dribbled past two defenders and slotted the ball into the top left corner to put the Bianconeri back on level terms.

They almost took the lead just after the half hour mark when a Bruno Fernandes shot struck the Cesena crossbar.

Bruno Fernandes was more accurate on the stroke of half-time, when he produced a wonder strike from outside of the box which took Andrea Stramaccioni’s side into the break with a one goal lead.

The Cavallucci Marini were back in the game 10 minutes after the restart, when a Djuric free-kick resulted in a Davide Succi header nestling in the back of the net.

Just past the hour mark, the referee produced a straight red card for Massimo Volta after he fouled goalscorer Bruno Fernandes, so Cesena had to battle the last half hour with 10 men.

There was no breakthrough until full time, though, which meant this fixture went to extra-time, where Lucas Evangelista put Udinese ahead when he headed in a cross from Pasquale.

They then made it four thanks to Cyril Thereau after he slotted home a cross with his first touch in the 113th minute.
