Despite seemingly happy to concede possession to hosts Empoli, Torino coach Giampiero Ventura insisted that his side had gone to Tuscany looking to win but blamed the fatigue felt after their Europa League exertions

The Italian claimed it was a valuable point despite the sides being just two apart in the Serie A table but the fitness advantage held over his side meant they played a ‘tactical game’.

“We got a point against a team that is physically very strong,” Ventura told Sky Sport Italia.

“This is our 25th game of the season and something we have paid for. We had some incredible chances, but I think we can be satisfied with the result against a team that is very good.

“Quagliarella today played a much better game than the last, Martinez also did well.

“We were prepared for a match tactically not easy, clear that we wanted to win but you do not always succeed.”

Given the physical effects the Granata’s European campaign is taking the coach suggested he is not thinking of the transfer window reopening at the moment and the team will eventually improve performances.

“I do not talk about the transfer market at this time,” claimed Ventura. “There are many players who are improving, in a month I hope that we will have less trouble because this is part of growth.

“Against a team so healthy the result is very good, although it is obvious that we can and must do more.”

Drawn with Athletic Club when the Europa League resumes in February Ventura is confident they can upset the Spaniards when they meet.

“I think we can go there and do well,” continued the 66-year-old. “We have met that Bruges who are first in Belgium.”
