Vicenza downed Brescia 2-0 at the Stadio Romeo Menti while Modena and Livorno played to a scoreless draw at the Stadio Alberto Braglia in Serie B action on Monday night. Serie-B-300x181

The Biancorossi defeated Brescia in a match of clubs headed in opposite directions, taking advantage of lax Rondinelle defending, for their fifth consecutive match without a loss.

Brescia deserved a better fate on the night as they controlled much of the possession but were unfortunate not to score and made to pay by a counter-attacking Pasquale Marino side that is swiftly climbing up the Serie B table.

The loss sends Brescia a precarious two points above the play-out zone and fighting for their Serie B lives while Vicenza are now dreaming of glory as the victory places the Veneto club a mere two points away from a play-off spot and a chance at a Serie A return after a 15-year absence.

Brescia had the initial run of play and notched the first scoring chances when Leonardo Morosini’s shot went just wide inside of 10 minutes and scored less than five minutes later when Marco Valotti hit the net but, in a decision that could’ve gone either way, was adjudged to be offside.

Federico Moretti opened the scoring late in the first half when left unmarked amdist a sea of Brescia defenders who were caught ball watching on a corner kick and gifted the striker only his second goal of the season.

The Rondinelle came out strong in the second half bent on leveling the match but were thwarted by poor finishing all around. Coach Ivo Iaconi attempted to change Brescia’s fate with attacking substitutions but it was not to be the Biancoazzurri’s night.

When Edoardo Lancini was ejected for his second yellow late in the second half, Brescia lost all their balance and were eventually caught out when Davide Di Gennaro floated a pass over a stretched Brescia defense and substitute Giovanni Sbrissa controlled the pass and slotted home his first goal to secure the victory.

Livorno were fortunate to leave Modena with a point as the Amaranto were reduced to nine men, a result as indicative of the Canarini failings to mount a credible attack given their numerical advantage as it was Livorno’s resolute defending on the road.

The result keeps Livorno in the top four and three points away from an automatic return to Serie A, while Walter Novellino’s side are searching for a consistent goal scoring threat as the Canarini are tied with three other clubs for fourth worst in goals (16).
