AC Milan have reportedly set their sights on landing Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel before the end of the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old, whose current contract with Zenitchiki is set to expire in June 2017, is thought to be looking for a way out of Russia and has been linked with a move to several clubs in recent weeks including the Rossoneri and Arsenal, though it seems like he may be closest to embarking on a career in the Serie A.

According to SportMediaset, AC Milan have already started negotiations with Zenit to secure the Belgian international on loan for the remainder of the season for a fee of around €3 million, with the right to permanently sign him for around €17 million over the summer.

Reports also suggest that the former Benfica man is strongly in favour of a move to the Diavolo as it would be the biggest club he’s ever played at.

Witsel has score three goals and provided one assist in his 16 Russian Premier League appearances this term thus far.
