Atalanta coach Stefano Colantuono believes the formula of the Coppa Italia needs to be changed following his side’s elimination from the competition after a 3-1 loss to Fiorentina.

The 52-year-old strongly believes the format of the tournament should be reviewed in order to allow the lower ranked teams to progress to the latter stages.

“In my opinion the format is wrong, it is always the same [teams] who play in the final,” he told the press post-match.

“It becomes impossible for the small or medium sized teams.”

Despite the loss, the Italian was content with his side’s performance following his decision to allow several players to gain more matchexperience.

“We knew the match would be difficult,” he said.

“I have several players that I wanted to try this evening to give space to those who play less.”

“ I am happy, we played to the end.”

Despite the positive sentiments, the tactician was sent into the stands following his protests with the referee for the tackle on midfielder Giulio Migliaccio.

“Maybe I protested too much but there was a heavy blow on Migliaccio,” he continued.

“I was not asking for a yellow [card] but at least a freekick.”
