Rafa-Benitez-turista-a-NapoliNapoli coach Rafael Benitez is focussed on finishing third in Serie A, despite doubts over his future with the Azzurri.

Benitez joined the Partenopei in 2013 on a two-year contract that is due to end in the summer, and there is a lack of clarity over whether that contract will be extended beyond the current season as Napoli travel to Chievo on Sunday to continue their push for third-place.

“We’ll talk about my future in two or three months, for now I just want to think about finishing as high as possible with Napoli,” the Spaniard told the press.

“We have done everything to grow the club and the team independently of the coach, so it does not matter if I stay or not. Napoli is strong even if I’m gone so I focus on Chievo and Serie A.

The Azzurri sit third in the league, two points ahead of Lazio and Sampdoria ahead of the trip to Verona to face the goal-shy Chievo.

“In attack we are very good with many players that can lead from the front. That can lead to an imbalance so we focussed on a midfield of David [Lopez] and Walter [Gargano] to adapt us properly.

“They key for us is to win the games against ‘smaller’ teams, we need continuity and winning these game gives us more confidence.

The 54-year-old ex-Inter coach also discussed new signings Ivan Strinic and Manolo Gabbiadini, as well as looking back on the transfer window.

“We needed Strinic to play games straight away and he has done very well. Gabbiadini is a good player, but we have many choices in attack so it is not easy for him to start all the games.

“The market is closed now, but the president and directors prepare us for the next one- I am pleased with our transfer activity.”
