Hellas Verona coach Andrea Mandorlini has played down talk that his job is at risk after his side defeated Atalanta 1-0 on Sunday.

Verona saw off relegation rivals Atalanta to claim all three points in a game that could have seen more goals, had they been more clinical and had Marco Sportiello not had a good game in goal for the visitors.

Speaking to Rai Sport after the game, Mandorlini insisted that the win is an important one, but not for the security of his job.

“Every game counts,” he began.

“Today was a tough game against an Atalanta team that will give anybody a match.

“We came through a sensitive week but we deserved to win today.”

The delicate week he refers to is regarding the rumours surrounding the security of his job, with it even being suggested that defeat against Atalanta would have seen him sacked.

“Often the imagination of the journalist puts a coach under pressure,” he said, dismissing the talk.

“We will continue to fight until we are safe,” he concluded.

Hellas Verona currently sit in 14th place in Serie A, now four points clear of Sunday’s opponents.
