Mexes - Lazio v MilanAC Milan defender Philippe Mexes has apologised after being sent off for strangling Lazio’s Stefano Mauri.

The French defender got into an altercation with Mauri and was given his marching orders for grabbing the Lazio captain by the throat, Mexes then preceded to cause a ruckus while leaving the pitch, and tried to strangle Mauri.

“I take responsibility, I was wrong,” the 32-year-old told Sky Sport Italia after the game.

“I want to apologise to the club and to the fans. and everyone associated with Milan.

“This behaviour has happened in my career before, I didn’t do anything special on the field, but my reaction led to the red card.

“I have children and this is not an example to give as a father. It will not happen again.”

When asked if he was provoked by Mauri, Mexes took full blame.

“I was wrong. Now we [Milan] have to react and we will be in ritiro – closed training camp – till Tuesday for the Coppa Italia match, where we will give 1000 percent.”
