napoli san paoloNapoli are set to invest €20 million in improvements to the Stadio San Paolo.

Partenopei president Aurelio De Laurentiis has been looking to build a new stadium for Napoli, but this has been rejected by the local council and instead renovations will take place at their current ground.

According to Il Mattino, an agreement was made with the city’s Mayor Luigi De Magistris as Napoli have to make sure the San Paolo is of an adequate level for European competition.

As well as stadium improvements, which may include a new cover for the stands, there will also be regeneration of the area surrounding the ground, and possible investment of the adjacent neighbourhoods.

However, a proposal to build a new stadium was rejected as the cost incurred would have exceeded €100m, a sum the club did not want to pay.
