Torino needed a late winner from Maxi Lopez to overcome Cesena and move their way up the table while keeping the Seahorses near the foot of the table.

The Granata had led 2-0 but a brace of penalties from Franco Brienza pegged them back before Lopez’s first goal for the club on only his second appearance helped them to the three points.

Cesena

Nicola Leali – 5 – Culpable

He parried the opening goal out poorly, allowing Marco Benassi and also spilled to allow Fabio Quagliarella to get his name on the score sheet but could do nothing to keep out Lopez’s eventual winner.

Gabriele Perico – 5.5 – Unassured

Seemed to be rattled for a considerable spell after allowing Torino’s second goal to come down his side but regained composure a little as game went on.

Luka Krajnc – 5 – Surprise

The 20-year-old Slovenian defender’s inclusion in the starting side was a surprise and it was a move that did not pay off for coach Domenico Di Carlo as he was run ragged at times by Quagliarella.

Daniele Capelli – 4.5 – Hooked

Capelli did not have his most enjoyable day at the office and was called ashore at half time – which gives an indicator of just what his coach thought of his performance. Was always troubled by Torino’s pace.

Hordur Magnusson – 5 – Injured

Unfortunate when, after a decent opening to the match on the right of the midfield, he was withdrawn before the half time whistle through injury.

Giuseppe De Feudis – 5.5 – Positive

Always looked to be on the ball but was never able to find the pass that would turn the tide in his side’s favour throughout the match.

Luigi Giorgi – 6 – Enthusiastic

The former Palermo man hassled and harried opponents throughout and although he was not at his best, continued trying to make an impact for his side.

Ze Eduardo – 5 – Anonymous

Helped in the build up to win Brienza’s penalty but did very little of note in the match and was replaced with 20 minutes left.

Franco Brienza – 7 – Penalty

Lethal from the penalty spot, the ex-Atalanta attacker was once again Cesena’s main attacking threat, as he has been over the course of the past month, and twice scored from the spot. He will be pivotal if his side are to avoid the drop.

Gregoire Defrel – 6 – Zippy

Was a constant livewire in attack, continually on the move and looking to find space between defenders but there was little incisiveness or finality to anything he managed on the day.

Milan Djuric – 5.5 – Selfless

Put in a lot of selfless work for his teammates with his offloading of the ball and trying to allow others on it but did little of note to effect it.

Substitutes

Francesco Renzetti (Magnusson 39 minutes) – 6 – Solid

Did well upon his introduction to the midfield for Magnusson and enjoyed a good second half showing.

Stefano Lucchini (Capelli 46 minutes) – 5.5 – Better

A much better performance from Lucchini than the man who he replaced and was solid when he needed to be although could be accused of switching off for Lopez’s winner.

Nico Pulzetti (Ze Eduardo 70 minutes) – N/A

Torino

Daniele Padelli – 5 – Mistake

His foul handed Brienza his first penalty with a foul in the penalty area but could do little to keep out his spot kick efforts.

Nikola Maksimovic – 6 – Consistent

Another solid showing from the defender who again showed his eye for a run forward and always got the best of any one-in-one tussles he was involved in.

Pontus Jansson – 5 – Unenviable

The task of replacing captain Kamil Glik would never be easy but Jansson did not put forward the greatest case for continued appearances with a poor error to allow the Seashorses in for their second penalty kick.

Emiliano Moretti – 5.5 – Experienced

Showed some slight signs of nerves here and there but was always in the right place when he needed to to make the most of his experience.

Bruno Peres – 6 – Energy

A constant threat, always eager to advance while remaining solid defensively – continues to improve and impress with every game for the Granata.

Alexander Farnerud – 7 – Excellent

Finally, the Swede looks to be getting back to his best. He claimed two assists in the space of two first half minutes and was efficient and clever in his use of possession in the second half.

Marco Benassi – 6.5 – Opener

He was trusted with a start, of which he hasn’t had a lot since his move from Inter, and made the most of the opportunity with a fine game in which he took his goal well.

Alessandro Gazzi – 6 – Fighter

Gave a lot of order and balance to the Torino midfield while leaving a lot of the flair football to Benassi and Farnerud but would have been missed had he not been there.

Matteo Darmian – 6.5 – Threat

Always a threat for Torino on the left hand side from start and was sorely missed when he was substituted at half time.

Josef Martinez – 6.5 – Improving

The Venezuelan has Torino fans excited but must improve in front of goal as he passed up opportunities in this contest and his relationship with Quagliarella could improve but the signs are encouraging for the young man.

Fabio Quagliarella – 7.5 – Danger

He continually gave the sense that he would be able to carve out something for the Granata and always gave the impression that he could score when in an advanced area and claimed a goal and assist in a superb individual performance.

Substitutes

Salvatore Masiello (Darmian 46 minutes) – 5 – Average

He did not have the same impact at all as Darmian did and it showed in an attacking sense.

Omar El Kaddouri (Benassi 61 minutes) – 5.5 – Bite

Gave some vivacity to the Torino midfield at a time when it allowed them to get a good grip on the game.

Maxi Lopez (Martinez 69 minutes) – 6.5 – Winner

Got the goal that secured the points three minutes from time.
