Round 20 of the 2014/15 Serie A season saw Juventus climb further away from Roma after the Giallorossi were stalled by Fiorentina and the Old Lady overcame Chievo.

It was a miserable week for both Milanese clubs as they both lost and Parma lost a crucial home game to Cesena, while Empoli lost to ten men Udinese, and Napoli beat Genoa 2-1 in the Monday night action.

The formation chosen for the Team of The Week is a 4-3-2-1 Christmas tree style eleven with Mario Gomez leading the line, Kamil Glik and Vangelis Moras earn recognition for their committed displays by making up the centre back pairing and two Cagliari players also make the team.

Have we overlooked anybody? As ever please free to leave a comment if you disagree with our selection.

Nicola Leali – Cesena

Conceded a comedy own goal, however could not be faulted for the incident as his defender inexplicably chose to roll the ball past him. That aside the young shot stopper was at hand to deny opponents Parma whenever they threatened and he was a calming influence for his side.

Dusan Basta – Lazio (2 Team of The Week appearances)

More notable for his attacking qualities than defensive duties. Played practically as a winger, helping to pin back opponents AC Milan in their own half and also combined intelligently with Antonio Candreva down the right flank.

Team of the Week 20Vangelis Moras – Hellas Verona

The experienced Greek defender gave a fully committed, resolute display in his side’s win over Atalanta. Made two crucial tackles on Nerazzurri forward German Denis.

Kamil Glik  – Torino

The Torino captain was Mr Reliable again as he effortlessly repelled the Nerazzurri attacks in the Sunday afternoon clash with Inter and organised his troops effectively. Kept Mauro Icardi under wraps for large periods of the game.

Danilo Avelar – Cagliari (3 apps)

Kept things tight at the back and looked to venture forward whenever possible. Combined well with Daniele Dessena down the left flank and supplied the perfect cross for defender Rossettini to open the scoring from.

Lucas Biglia – Lazio (2 apps)

Made an early mistake that led to a  Jeremy Menez goal but then recovered to take control of the central midfield area and allow the Biancocelesti to completely dominate against AC Milan. Was far superior than the likes of Riccardo Montolivio and Andrea Poli in the Rossoneri engine room.

Paul Pogba – Juventus (8 apps)

The young Frenchman makes his customary appearance in our Team of The Week. Was head and shoulders above everyone else in the Bianconeri’s win over Chievo, opening the scoring with a piece of magic from outside the box and nearly added a second with an effort that the goalkeeper scrambled away.

Daniele Dessena – Cagliari

One of the midfielders best performances of the season. Used the ball intelligently in the match against Sassuolo and provided a delicate Andrea Pirlo-esque chipped pass for substitute Duje Cop to volley home from.

Antonio Candreva – Lazio

Tormented the hapless AC Milan defence and midfield throughout their evening clash, whipping in countless dangerous crosses and beating his opposing marker with ease.

Maximilliano Moralez – Atalanta

Was on the losing side but tried his best to inspire his team against a stubborn Verona rearguard. Was ultimately unable to make a decisive contribution but still skipped past his opponents at will and was lively throughout.

Mario Gomez – Fiorentina

It has been a season to forget so far for the big German but three goals in his last two games will have helped his confidence. Followed up his brace in the Coppa Italia with a well taken goal against Roma. Is still not on top form but he was certainly more involved in the match and linked up with his team mates more than in previous weeks.
