Serie B 2014/15 – Week 23 Round Up: Cittadella move off the foot of the table

Bottom of the table Cittadella defeated Avellino 2-1 at the Stadio Partenio on Saturday afternoon in Serie B.

Goals from Francesco Stanco and Federico Gerardi put the visitors 2-0 up before Paolo Regoli pulled one back for the Biancoverdi.

Avellino had a good chance to take the lead in the early moments when Luigi Castaldo chipped the ball to Regoli who controlled well and volleyed at goal but his effort was tipped wide Andrea Pierobon.

The away side had a chance of their own soon after as a loose ball fell to Gerardi and his curling effort was palmed away by Alfred Gomis.

In the 26th minute Citta took the lead through Stanco. A ball whipped in by Antonio Barecca found Stanco who arched his body to guide a header at goal which slithered under the body of Gomis and into the bottom corner.

Citta were awarded a penalty in the 42nd minute and a chance to double their lead when Tomasz Kupisz was fouled in the box. Gerardi stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom corner, sending Gomis the other way.

Minutes later the home side pulled one back. Pietro Visconti whipped in a looping cross into the box and Regoni arrived late to send a powerful side-foot volley past Pierobon.

The away side were on top and who had two great chances to extend their lead at the start of the second half. Firstly, Gerardi laid the ball off to Nicola Rigoni, who blazed over the bar and then Gerardi did the same from close range on the volley.

Avellino were close to an equaliser when Visconti curled a free-kick narrowly wide of the post from the edge of the box.

Citta had another chance to score near the end as Rigoni went clear through on goal and his weak effort was denied by Gomis.

The visitors held on to move themselves two places from the bottom into 20th place, two points ahead of Latina.

At the other end of the table, Carpi maintained their six point lead after defeating Varese 1-0 away from home.

Talisman, Jerry Mbakogu found himself on the scoresheet once again to claim the vital three points for the league leaders.

Livorno built on their 2-1 win over Carpi from last week by beating Brescia 4-2 at the Stadio Armando Picchi.

Brescia took the lead early on through Daniele Corvia, but Livorno swiftly turned the game on its head before half time after Enej Jelenic and Luca Siligardi netted for the Amaranto.

It was 3-1 to the home side at the start of the second half when Lorenzo Gonnelli scored but the Leonessa pulled one back moments later through Alessio Sestu.

The game was beyond doubt at the death as Damjan Djokovic scored to make the game 4-2 and send his side up to third place.

The game between two promotion candidates Frosinone and Spezia finished 1-1 at the Stadio Matusa.

The home side went in front in the 18th minute through striker Daniel Ciofani but they were pegged back ten minutes into the second half Roberto Gagliardini.

Despite the Ciociari being on top they could not find a winner.

Elsewhere, Vicenza defeated ten-man Trapani 3-0 to move one place off the play-off positions.

Goals from Nicolo Brighenti, Davide Di Gennaro and Federico Moretti sealed the win for the Biancorossi over Trapani who had Enis Nadarevic dismissed.

Ternana sprung a surprise on Pescara by winning 2-1 at the Stadio Adriatico.

An own goal from Francesco Zampano put the away side 1-0 to the good early on but the Delfini responded through Birkir Bjarnason moments later.

Then, in the 70th minute Fabio Ceravolo netted to claim all three points for Fere.

Bologna remained in second place after they defeated Virtus Entella 2-1.

Andrea Mazzarani put Entella in front but an equaliser on the stroke of half-time from Marios Oikonomou meant that the two sides were level heading into the break.

At the start of the second half, Michele Russo put the ball in his own net to give Bologna 2-1 lead which they held onto until the end.

At the foot of the table, Crotone beat Latina 2-1 to ensure that Latina would be in last place at the end of the day.

Camillo Ciano gave Crotone the lead in the 4oth minute via the penalty spot, but Latina levelled moments before half-time through Federico Viviani.

Latina were reduced to ten men just past the hour mark as Angelo was sent off and then the Rossoblu regained the lead minutes later through Ernesto Torregrossa.

Lastly, Perugia and Bari played out a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Renato Curi.

Giuseppe De Luca put the visitors 1-0 up in the 12th minute, but they were reduced to ten men in the second half as Ionut Rada was dismissed.

Perugia got themselves level in the 69th minute through Guillermo Giacomazzi and both teams got a share of the spoils.
