Former AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has come out in defence of current Rossoneri coach Filippo Inzaghi, suggesting that with the club putting faith in someone of limited experience he should be given time to rectify their current failings.
A teammate of the 41-year-old when the club last won the Champions League in 2007, Gattuso believes that while some players may be struggling for form they must fight more for the AC Milan shirt.
“Seeing Milan in recent years hurts,” Gattuso told Milan News.
“I feel very heavy judgments against the presidency and the leadership. We must never forget that for 25 years AC Milan has always been at the top of European and world football.
“I was always used to seeing a maximum of two people taking decisions within Milan.
“Now, however, there are more heads and both the players and the environment feel this and I think we need to improve in this aspect.
“Who has more responsibility? When you win, it is thanks to everyone. When you lose, the blame can be divided.
“The culprit is not just Pippo, not Galliani.
“When you have very little experience and you offered an important job it is difficult to refuse. It happened to me in Palermo.
“When you begin to coach you are still following an adrenaline rush as when you played. I do not know how many people, in front of an offer so prestigious, could refuse.
“Inzaghi deserves time. He is a young coach and must have that.
“When he was chosen he was asked knowing that he was not a coach of experience. That is something you only get after years on the bench. [Alex] Ferguson has lived a different kind of football.
“Pippo must still be happy because you see that the players play for him. It is true that the results are not coming but the team and the company are with him.
“Milan are composed of good players with quality. Today, however, the quality is not enough.
“You have to have the fire inside and to sweat for the shirt they wear. To get the results you have to follow this road here.”
