Celtic defender Jason Denayer has blamed the referee for the 1-0 defeat against Inter, that consequently resulted in his side’s elimination from the UEFA Europa League by an aggregate score of 4-3.

The Scottish champions had been reduced to ten men after Virgil van Dijk received a first half sending off for two bookable offences for fouls on Rodrigo Palacio and later Mauro Icardi.

Speaking to FC Inter News, Denayer refused to criticise his teammate and instead handed the blame to the referee for sending him off.

“I am disappointed by the game,” he began. “I am especially disappointed by the conduct of the referee.

“I am convoked that many of his decisions were incorrect, he made bad choices.”

The defender went on to defend his teammate Van Dijk and insists he needn’t apologise.

“I do not think he [Van Dijk] should apologise because he did not commit any fouls worthy of a yellow card.

“We deserved better, I do not know why the referee made these decisions.”

Inter will face Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in the Round of 16 of the competition.
