Roma coach Rudi Garcia felt that his side were unlucky in Tuesday night’s 2-0 Coppa Italia defeat to Fiorentina, whilst addressing the club’s recent defensive woes.

The Giallorossi have struggled to pick up wins in recent weeks and their defence has come under scrutiny after an upsurge in goals conceded. Whilst admitting that Roma are suffering defensively, Garcia insisted that Fiorentina had luck on their side and that his own team started brightly.

“We had a good start in the first half but unfortunately it wasn’t enough,” the Frenchman told Rai Sport.

“Fiorentina’s goals in the second half came with their first opportunities, but sometimes that is what happens.

“It is often collective movements that are costing us defensively. We know it is a difficult time but we have to be stronger defensively and take our chances in attack.”

At the final whistle it seemed that the Roma fans were jeering the team, but Garcia dismissed the reaction.

“The fan protest? Throughout the match the Curva Sud supported us, it is normal to be disappointed at the end of a match in which we were eliminated.”
