Roma coach Rudi Garcia has hailed the performance of his players after they secured a 2-1 victory against Feyenoord in difficult circumstances to claim their place in the next round of the Europa League.

Thursday evening’s contest at De Kuip was marred by the behaviour of the home support which will almost certainly result in sanctions from UEFA, after the referee halted the match in the second half and ordered the players from the pitch.

“I am pleased with the performance of the boys. This is a deserved victory, perhaps a breakthrough victory,” Garcia told Mediaset Premium following the game. “But we must now return our focus to the championship.

“It was difficult to win here in the Netherlands and we have succeeded only thanks to the effort we put in. The boys gave everything today and they played with great intensity and a great desire.

“We were excellent to be able to score immediately after the conceding a goal, even if our performance dropped a bit too much towards the end. Now we need to find the right consistency.

“Why was the game suspended? I was right at the grandstand and I saw everything being thrown onto the pitch.”

Roma’s victory means that Italy will have five teams in the draw for the next round.
