Bryan Cristante BenficaAC Milan legend Gennaro Gattuso believes the club made a mistake when they sold youngster Bryan Cristante to Benfica in the summer.

The 19-year-old Italian youth international was heralded as one of the brightest young talents to come out of the Rossoneri academy in years, but asked to join the Portuguese champions after finding opportunities limited at the Italian giants.

“Was it a mistake selling Cristante? Yes, it was a bad decision. They should’ve kept him,” Gattuso told A Bola.

“It’s difficult for a young kid to succeed at a big club like Milan. Before they leave, they should have more experience in the Italian league.

“For example, I started at Perugia. Playing for Benfica however, is like playing for Milan, therefore he must take advantage of his opportunities.”

Cristante has struggled to secure regular first team football in Portugal too however, only making one start and three substitute appearances in the league so far.
