Inter coach Roberto Mancini refused to blame his defence for their 3–1 defeat at Sassuolo on Sunday afternoon, but admitted they are displaying a mental fragility far too often when falling behind.

Instead the 50-year-old praised the Neroverdi for their victory, even if he considered his own side’s performance ‘ordinary’.

“This is football, there are no easy games,” Mancini told Mediaset Premium.

“We have had some openings, but I can say that today the team deserved defeat.

“We were too ordinary. We must continue to play as we know, I feel sorry for the guys that are doing everything. We need our fans, though of course I understand that they are sad for this period.

“Today we have always played in the oppositions half, with so much possession.

“Right now we are paying for every mistake but we accept it, we lost against a very organised team. In the second-half I changed some things, to be more present in the opposing penalty area.”

The former Manchester City coach then went on to discuss his side’s mental issues and inability to cope when Inter went down.

“Clearly there is a bit of fragility there,” admitted Mancini to Sky Sport Italia. “Because at the slightest difficulty will suffer negative things, but the team is trying to play.

“Nothing happened with Vidic, there have been a couple of situations in which he played the ball back, but these things happen.

“Today there were errors of judgment, because we knew the danger of opponents but we let them twice expose situations studied in the week. We were too mild in these circumstances.

“In possession of the ball we are going well, but we have to improve the attack, this is what we lack.

“In the second-half we did even better, we had a number of chances, unfortunately, everything goes wrong and the players are a bit down in the dumps because they want to win.”
