Feyenoord had two men sent off in a controversial Europa League clash against Roma, leading to coach Fred Rutten questioning the decisions of the referee.

Mitchell te Vrede and Erwin Mulder (who was an unused substitute but was ejected from the bench) both saw straight red cards within four minutes of each other, sparking unsavoury scenes from the crowd, leading to play being suspended before Gervinho hit the winner upon the resumption.

“It was a very strange game,” said Rutten afterwards. “In the first half we did not play our own game and had to deal with pressure from Roma, credit to them for this.

“The goal was a tough one for us mentally. The red card for Te Vrede had a big impact on the game and after equalising, we struggled to push on as a result.

“You cannot put the blame for the defeat on to one person but clearly you can question the consistency of the referee.”
