Carlo TavecchioHead of the Italian football federation, Carlo Tavecchio, is hoping to slim down Serie A to 18 teams in an attempt to aid the plight of Antonio Conte’s national side.

The outspoken president of the FIGC also believes the same should apply to Serie B, if Italy is to regain it’s place at the pinnacle of world football.
“Both the Serie A and B divisions must lose two teams each to help with the needs of the Italian national side,” reported La Gazzetta dello Sport, as Tavecchio discussed league reforms.

“We must make changes for the good of the game as well as our clubs, which will avoid issues during call-ups and national team ‘get-togethers’.  We are in line for qualification to the next European Championships yet there are still problems, which I just don’t understand.”

Tavecchio was brought in to lead the federation after the 2014 World Cup replacing Giancarlo Abete, who resigned after Italy’s disastrous Brazil campaign.

This would be a wise move. Since Italy increased their Serie A to 20 teams in 2004, their European presence diminished significantly to what it was before then.
