League leaders Carpi traveled south to Sicily to kick off the 25th round in Serie B action and drew 0-0 against a determined Trapani side at the Stadio Provinciale on Friday night. Serie-B-300x181

The result benefits both squads as the Biancorossi extend their lead at the summit to nine points while the Granata end a horrific four-match losing slide and still remain within striking distance of the playoff positions.

The home side came out brightly and created some early chances as a result of their high-pressure. The Granata’s first few opportunities, Mattia Aramu’s cross which barely evaded a glancing header from Giovanni Abate and Francesco Lo Bue’s off target shot, both resulted from a commitment to deny Carpi’s lethal attackers any space and quickly win back possession.

It didn’t take long for the visitor’s to display the quality behind their league-leading 43 goals when Serie B goals leader Jerry Mbakogu fed Salvatore Molina in the area and only a dangerous but effective tackle kept Molina from a point-blank opportunity. Moments later Antonio Di Gaudio’s  right-footed curling shot from just outside the box required a diving save from Lys Gomis to keep the visitors at bay.

Di Gaudio once again had the game on his right foot before the break when he received a long, searching ball and after creating a bit of space unleashed a rocket which was kicked out by a sprawling Gomis.

Trapani striker Davis Curiale typified the Sicilians effort on the night when he tracked down Lorenzo Lollo from behind but his pass was swallowed up by Gabriel who moved off his line a split-second ahead of Maurizio Ciaramitaro.

Gomis nearly undid all Trapani’s hard work when he misplayed an easy back pass and barely avoided an embarrassing an own goal, clearing the ball into touch ahead of a charging Raffaele Bianco.

The Senegalese keeper redeemed himself moments later making a miraculous double save to keep high-flying Carpi scoreless. The threat began with a corner which took a sharp deflection off Mbakogu but Gomis parried it away and then frustrated the Nigerian again by keeping the rebound out of his net.

The hosts were nearly gifted all three points at the death when Riccardo Gagliolo’s errant clearance was intercepted but played right back to him and somehow the 24-year old once again drilled his attempted clearance off a Trapani attacker. Luck was on Carpi’s side however as the ball once again fell kindly to Gagliolo whose third attempted clearance proved the game’s last kick.
