Ternana clawed back from an early deficit at the Stadio Liberati to defeat Brescia 2-1 and wrap up week 25 of Serie B action on Sunday night. Serie-B-300x181

The visitors went up early on Alessio Sestu’s strike but it was Ternana’s Fabio Ceravolo’s day as the 27-year old set up Felipe Avenatti in the second half and scored his sixth of the season a minute later to land the Rossoverdi just outside the playoff positions in a tight Serie B table.

It was a thrilling match in Terni as no less than three crossbars were struck and the sides totaled for a 15 on target shots as both goalkeepers remained busy on a chilly Umbrian night.

Both sides started brightly and exchanged early chances including an excellent opportunity by the hosts when Pasquale Fazio played in Davide Gavazzi with an exquisite pass but the ensuing shot was saved by Michele Arcari. Brescia responded immediately when Daniele Corvia rattled the crossbar with a header to temporarily keep the visitors off the score sheet.

The elements helped Brescia take the lead when Corvia played in a deep cross which held up in the wind and fooled Ternana keeper Alberto Brignoli to gift Sestu an easy goal.

Ternana responded with a pair of chances at the half hour mark but were denied the deserved equalizer. A textbook header from Mirko Eramo was saved by an excellent reaction save from Arcari and moments later Avenatti played Eramo into the area but the ensuing close range shot was blocked by a last-second dive.

The Rondinelle nearly doubled their advantage after the break on strikes by Andrea Caracciolo and Corvia before Ternana coach Alessio Tessier made a vital double switch and looked to regain control by switching to a 4-3-1-2 formation.

The move paid immediate dividends when Ceravolo played in a delicious cross from the left flank and Avenatti slotted it home to level the match. The go ahead came before the Rossoverdi fans sat back down when Cesar Falletti made a slalom run through the area and his pass was met by a cannon volley from Ceravolo to put the hosts ahead.

A reeling Brescia could only threaten from another Caracciolo header while Ceravolo’s potential brace was denied by the crossbar.
