Perugia defeated Modena 2-0 at the Stadio Renato Curi on Friday night kicking off the 26th week in Serie B play.

The Grifone drew first blood on a classic counter-attack goal by Valerio Verre at the death of the first half and Nicolo Fazzi added a tap-in after the break to doom a Canarini side that could never grasp a foothold in the match. Serie-B-300x181

The match started quietly for both sides as much of the action took place in the middle of the park and it wasn’t until the quarter hour mark when a misplaced clearance found Verre at the top of the area but his quick shot was just wide of Carlo Pinsoglio’s near post.

Pablo Granché had a trio of chances for the Canarini in the first half but two headers fell well wide and the Argentinian did not cleanly catch a well-worked low cross which was easily gobbled up by Perugia’s Jan Koprivec.

The breakthrough came on a disappointing series of errors for Modena when they lost the ball at midfield and Fabinho ran straight at the defense while Modena’s Lino Marzorati, who was beaten on the play, implored Matteo Rubin step up to the attacker and when he hesitated Fabinho played an easy square ball to Verre who took his time to line up a shot which edged agonizingly over the line to put the Grifone on top.

A dangerous Andrea Schiavone free kick early in the second half which bounced just in front of Koprivec and was well saved by the Slovenian proved to be one of the few chances the visitors were to have the rest of the match.

Perugia salted away the three points as Fabinho once again played the role of distributor with 15 minutes left on the clock. The Brazilian playmaker was first to through ball in the area and managed to cross it past a pair of Modena defenders and beyond Pinsoglio’s reach to Fazzi who was left unmarked at the far post where he couldn’t miss scoring his first goal of the season.

The well-earned victory, the first in four matches for Perugia, takes the pressure off coach Andrea Campione who appeared in danger of getting the sack this week due to the club’s poor form in favor of veteran tactician Gianluca Atzori.
