Avellino crushed an inconsistent Frosinone squad 3-0 at the Stadio Partenio on Saturday afternoon to catapult the Lupi into fourth place in Serie B. Serie-B-300x181

The home side had the perfect start when Adriano Russo needlessly hacked down Benjamin Mokulu in the area in the opening moments even though the Belgian attacker was not in a position to threaten the goal. The Gialloblu suffered for their foolishness when new signing Marcello Trotta sent Mirko Pigliacelli the wrong way and easily slotted home the subsequent penalty.

Frosinone responded well with three wonderful chances in the first half but were denied by Alfred Gomis as the big Senegalese keeper palmed several well struck shots over the crossbar and denied other half chances by quickly coming off his line.

The visitor’s best efforts to get back into the game were undone by another moment of self destruction when Manuel Panic beat Angelo D’Angelo to a Trotta through ball in the area but fell awkwardly when trying to clear the ball and the Avellino captain had a simple tap in to double the lead within the first moments of the second half. A beautifully struck right-footed cannon from Luigi Castaldo 25 yards out finished off Frosinone who slipped to sixth place.

Livorno traveled to Varese and picked up an important 1-0 victory to gain ground on second place Bologna who shared the spoils in a scoreless draw against Ternana. The match lacked much pace until early in the second half when Livorno broke the deadlock as Luca Siligardi dribbled across the Varese area before uncorking a left-footed strike which barely snuck inside the far post for his eighth goal of the season.

Latina’s Federico Viviani scored twice in the last five minutes to down Pescara 2-0 in a thrilling victory for the Postini. Both keepers were called upon throughout to make acrobatic saves and keep their squads in the game though no heroic measures were needed when Pescara’s Ledian Memushaj took a spot kick and scuffed it wide of the goal after having sent Raffaele Di Gennaro diving the wrong way.

Lanciano defeated a struggling Brescia side who were never in the match by a 2-0 scoreline to stop a two game losing streak for the Frentani. The home side began brightly when Gaetano Monachello’s header barely missed the far post in the opening seconds and Lanciano never let up for the entire 90 minutes.

Monachello opened the scoring in the second half as Michele Arcari made a point blank save but his rebound fell right to the 20-year old on loan from Monaco who scored his eighth goal of the season. Mame Thiam sealed the match 10 minutes later when a deflected pass put the Senegalese through for an easy tally.

League leading Carpi were held to a scoreless draw at home by Spezia, Vicenza downed Bari 1-0 for their fourth consecutive victory and Entella and shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
